Time Out!

I’m Back! Last week felt like a whirlwind! Life threw everything at me – the good, the bad, and the downright overwhelming. You know those weeks? Where you just have to hit pause, take a deep breath, and figure out what truly matters.

And that’s exactly what I did.

I embraced the chaos.

Here’s a photo of me and my sweet cat, Pip, who is the best workout companion. I tried running for the first time since my fibula break last June. It felt promising, but PT has left my ankle a little tender. I’m so impatient! I want to get back to my 5K’s, but it looks like that’s going to be a while.

Something about this “Third Act” – this glorious period of life that starts sometime in our late 50s, early 60s (who really knows the official rules?) – is allowing me to roll with the punches. Suddenly, I have the freedom to pursue passions, explore my creativity, and actually make a difference.

Case in point: I fell behind on my writing last week. Instead of panicking, I simply let it go. Imagine! If only I’d mastered this art of non-stress 30 years ago…

You see, I spent a lifetime in survival mode. Overthinking every single thing, like a secret agent scanning a room for escape routes.

But now? Now, I’m in my 60s, and it’s exhilarating! I feel like I’m back in my early 20s, full of possibility.

Aging? Don’t fear it!

Younger generations, listen up! Ignore the noise – the messages that tell you you’re too old, not good enough, not beautiful enough. Ask yourself, “Why do I care what they think?”

It took me a lifetime to get here, but it’s worth it.

Let’s all have a great week!

Play Time

This video will not surprise anyone who knows me. I grew up surrounded by artists and have a very creative and playful side to me. Having experience with technology and visual arts, I am having a lot of fun these days playing around in a class that teaches special video transition effects. It is virtual, so I am learning with people from all over the world!

Why Play as an Adult?

In our busy lives, we often neglect play. However, play is crucial for adults, just as it is for children. It’s more than just fun; it’s essential for our well-being.

Benefits of Play:

  • Reduces Stress: Play releases endorphins, natural mood boosters that combat stress and anxiety.
  • Sharpens the Mind: Engaging in mentally stimulating games and activities improves cognitive function and memory.
  • Boosts Creativity: Play encourages imaginative thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Strengthens Relationships: Shared laughter and playful interactions deepen bonds with others.
  • Increases Vitality: Playful activities can boost energy levels and improve overall well-being.

In essence, play is not just for kids. It’s a vital ingredient for a happy and fulfilling adult life. Consider taking a little time out to play this week. I’m curious to know activities you all are exploring. Let me know in the comments. If anyone is interested in the video transition class I mentioned, visit https://www.hellosocialize.com/studio or look for Helen Polise, @themuthership, on all social media platforms. This class is so much fun!

2025 No Buy New Clothes Challenge

So you may be wondering why I have an image of salads here. Well, back when I was attempting this challenge in 2023, I tried to think of anything that might trip me up. One simple thought that came to mind was, this challenge would only work if I could maintain my current size. Hmmmm. What is the best way to insure this outcome?

I have said this before, this no-buy challenge made me think about my consumption in all other areas of my life. The way I looked at what I ate daily changed considerably. I made it real simple. During the workweek it was oats & fruit for breakfast, a big salad for lunch. It’s a challenge for most to get the 5 servings of fruits & vegetables in every day. This was an easy way for me to get them in and not have to think about it. Having these all prepped and ready to go takes a whole lot of decisions out of my week, which frees up time to run errands, meet up with a friend or go for a walk.

Dinner for me is mostly some type of protein, vegetable and starch of some kind. On the weekends I’m so busy, the challenge is remembering to eat enough. Weekends are also the time when I like to indulge. It all seems to work for me to maintain my weight. Another added benefit, it is good for the wallet too!

Food is hard though. We are constantly bombarded with all types of foods and recipes that are delicious but not very healthy. But they are sooooooo tasty! It’s tough and tricky, and a whole other conversation. Like anything else, if you want to make a change start small.
